New Books July 1st

  • Jun. 29th, 2009 at 9:12 PM

Hey Geeks!

Here are this weeks new releases. Not as big as last week. There is some really good stuff coming in this week. (**Here’s a first – I’m looking forward to more DC titles than Marvel this week)

DC has the new limited series Cry for Justice, which has been previewed in some prior books. Green’s Arrow and Lantern create a new league in the wake of recent deaths (Martian Manhunter, Batman) to be proactive not reactive towards the villain community. Also from DC is Secret Six (one of the best DC books), Green Lantern Corps and Batman & Robin #2.

Marvel has Captain America Reborn (on the fence about this) Exiles (yeah!), Iron Man and part 2 of Utopia the Dark X-Men in Uncanny (last weeks Uncanny was so ugh…) and War of Kings (is she realllly dead!?)

For Indies we get Buffy, Angel, the Boys, Chew (great new creepy book) and a bunch more you can see below! Boys tp V4 comes out!

For you comic readers of the homosexual persuasion, Marvel is releasing Marvel Divas featuring Firestar, Hellcat, Black Cat and Photon (ex- Captain Marvel). It comes with an overly sexual cover aimed at the straight male reader but we know who’s really gunna buy it… don’t we girl.

Happy reading Geeks…

Hey Geeks!

Here are this weeks new releases. Marvel dominates with the amount of titles, poor lil DC tries. I can't even say that DC has the quality over Marvel. Storylines in the Marvel U are not only more fun to read, they actually manage to have a relevance to the MU as a whole. DC's doesn't. DC DOES have Green Lantern this week which should be on everybody’s pull list. AND Batwoman the lesbian super-heroine makes her debut in Detective YEAH!!!!

Reviews for you's Part 1

  • Jun. 19th, 2009 at 1:17 PM

I have been a fan of Dan Slott since She Hulk then GLA then the Avengers: Initiative. I am sad to say I am not a fan of his Mighty Avengers yet. Tho his writing is the only thing saving this book (thats not saying much). Dysfunctional teams are nothing new and this team is the poster team for it. But not always in a good way. I think there is toooo much going on and at times it's hard to care. Android loving, Cassie's off again on again attitude, Quicksilver and the hunt for his sister added to this we need a base, ugh... I know that he has to lay down the foundation to tell good stories but my patience is getting thin.
I do not like Koi Pham's art on this book. When I saw in the solicits months ago that he wasn't on it for these issues I was ecstatic! Since it started the art has been horrendous. I was hoping for relief, boy was I wrong. The latest issue had 4 artists and boy could you tell. When I thought it couldn't get worse, it did. One would think that an Avengers title would have grade A art. Not this one.
But Marvel knows how to sell a book. Stick a character people are so desperate to have again on a cover and it sells. Fantastic Force had Scarlet Witch on it and it sold out, didn't matter if she was in the book or not. Same goes for this book. She is not in it, but is on the cover. People buy it.

Young Avengers is another book people really want. Marvel has some silly idea that no one can write them but Allan Heinberg. Well after his Wonder Woman fiasco, I personally don't want him writing any book I read. So to keep the property viable Marvel keeps giving us mini series with them (usually with Runaways). This time we luckily have just the Young Avengers, kind of. In the new world of Dark Reign we have a darker more violent Young Avengers in town. The originals are all WTF??? and go to confront them where, like always, the two teams fight. Until they come to their senses and talk. We get some good background on a few of the new guys. There is 3 issues to go and I really have no clue where this is going? There is maybe some foreshadowing in her drawings (if you read it you'll understand). So far I like it.
I am a huge fan of Mark Brooks but I think the 3 inkers and 3 colorists are doing a big dissatisfaction to his art style. (Also I am not a fan of the glossiness) Sometimes the pages look great – Coat of Arms meeting Norman or the last page showing a famous mom. Other times people are no more than a circle with 2 dots for eyes. The dream parade group shot or the tv scene.
C'mon Marvel and get with it. Give them a monthly book. Enough with the crossover only.

War of Kings Ascension.
I write these reviews to give you my opinion. You know the old saying about opinions... we all have different likes and dislikes. I am no more an authority on these than any other site reviewer. Having said that I do not agree with the Buy Pile reviewer over at CBR. This book was awesome and brings a whole new level to Darkhawk. What if you just woke up and found that YOU had just assassinated an empress and didn't know anything that was going on? This issue fills in that time right before the shot in War Of Kings #4. Right after I read that issue, Coug and I were talking and I said what if Chris realizes what he had done and I was right! I cannot wait for the next issue. Ascension has been a great read and a compliment to the main book. Great story great art...

Ok a DC book must and a WTF?

Batman Streets of Gotham #1. Loved it. The story by Paul Dini was solid and the art by Dustin Nguyen is beautiful. His use of shadows and colors brings the dark “street” feel. The last page of the main story, the rooftop Batman and Robin facing the burning city is gorgeous. This is one Batbook not to miss.
AND the backup is Manhunter!!! by hottie homobear Marc Andreyko. The art is by Georges Jeanty (Buffy). It's 9 pages and is mostly set up but she's back. My only complaint is that the art in places is, well, at times to Buffyish. Barbara Gordon looks like Willow but his Manhunter is kick ass.

The WORST book this week has to be the waste of trees at 5 bucks Action Comics Annual. So a dream about 2 mythical creatures doing it inspired them to become the heroes? I was expecting more, much more. Left me feeling lost and like there should be a part 2. Bad. The one thing I did like was Non and his interaction with Chris. I also wonder how much of this will change with the new Superman Origin story coming out.

DC Reviews

  • Jun. 11th, 2009 at 6:23 PM

Hey Geeks!

This week was a light week for new releases. There were some really good books and some real bad ones. Here is my take on the DCU this week:

Batman #687 by Judd Winick and Ed Benes.
This was one of the best this week. It should have come out last week before Batman and Robin. It takes place right after Battle for the Cowl. That is what an epilogue is after all. This issue answers questions that we had even after reading Batman and Robin. Why are they not using the Bat Cave? Why wasn’t there a funeral? Winick does a great job in giving Alfred the voice of a grieving father. There were many great character moments but for me the best is when Superman and Wonder Woman show up to give the Bat costume back. It may not have a flying Bat car or strange new villains but it more than makes up in one hell of an emotion story. Great job Mr. Winick and Mr. Benes. Let’s hope the quality continues.

Staying in the Bat Family is Red Robin #1 by Chris Yost and Ramon Bachs.
First I LOVE me some Chris Yost. His writing, whether in comic book or cartoon form is one to respect and admire (except that he adapts Orson Scott Card in comic form. This I don’t respect.) He created X-23, killed and maimed more mutants in the last few years and currently writes my number 1 book X-Force. Now he writes Red Robin. What to think going in…Duh it’s Tim do I care? Why Red Robin? After reading it, I wanted more. Bruce said of Tim, that he could become the world’s greatest detective (back in Hush tp) Tim does not believe Bruce is dead, so going country to country across the world he sets out to find him. Using flashbacks, Yost explains what happened and why he’s wearing the Kingdom Come costume of Red Robin. The art by Bachs is dark and moody and colorist Guy Major really brings it together. My one compliant is that Dick and Tim look too much alike and no one owns a comb. Great read.

Wow 2 books by DC! I thought I hated DC, well, hate is a strong word. Guess what??? There’s more I liked!

Booster Gold is a book I don’t normally read. I did read this weeks (#21) and I am on board for the 4 issue arc. As it states on the cover
“You’re not Batman!” and no it wasn’t. That’s what got me interested. This ties into what’s going on in the “real” DCU. Booster Gold is DC’s Exiles. He goes though time fixing things. I have no clue who this Black Beetle is but he wants a world with no Batman. Oh no Mr. Bill. By the end of the issue, he may get his wish! Booster Gold to the rescue. I have to say that I have never been a huge fan of Booster. I loved the Blue and the Bold team up’s (I do not like the new Blue Beetle.) But knowing that the old Booster was all about the free press and getting his name out there, this new “only we can know” Booster is very interesting. When he saved the people and they were calling him all sorts of other supernames, he chooses to have people not know he saved them. As for the extra dollar for the 10 pages of story, I want my dollar back. If I rip out those pages and send it back, do you think I could get my buck back? Matthew Sturges does not impress me at all. I do not read his Fables or Jack run but his Salvation Run and Final Crisis Afterthought: Run is one of the worst things I’ve read. I am scared for the future of JSA. He and Bill Willingham are taking over the book soon. Not good…

Who should be taking over JSA is Eric S Trautmann and Don Kramer. They did this weeks JSA vs Kobra #1(of 6). What a great first issue. It was soo much better than the main JSA book has been. We get JSA and Checkmate in one book. Fans of either book should pick this up. AND Obsideon got more face time (kinda) as a hero in this issue than he has in months in the JSA book. Btw, Kramer is no stranger to pencilling on the JSA book. He did some issues on the last volume of JSA.

2 more – OMFGB really 2 more…

Green Lantern Corps (or should it be Corpse) #37. This and R.E.B.E.L.S. #5 round out my good DC books. Kinda. The writing is very strong in both. In GLC we have something BIG happening on Oa. Really big. Many people who read GL don’t pick up GLC and despite me telling them they should, they don’t and whooo doggies are they missing out. If you have any interst in Blackest Night, this should be on your pull list. In REBELS again, something big is happening. We get the introduction of the new Starro the Conqueror. Literally. My biggest problem is the art in both. Not a fan of Gleasons work here. Some wasted opportunities for what could be great visuals. The Alpha Lanters page was dissapointing. He draws creatures well enough but there is more to the book. While over in REBELS, the art is great, it just doesn’t fit the tone of the book. The colors are to bright. There is a lack of backgrounds on some pages and overuse of the white panels. Sometimes the book comes off cartoony and coloring bookish, which is far from what the book is about. The page of Starro should have been chilling instead I was like, aw that’s cute. I will say that the redesign is cool. (Marvel has this problem as well – I’ll be talking about 2 books that need an art style redirection.

So DC had some good books. BUT with the good comes the bad.

Final Crisis Afterthoughts: Escape. Not as bad as FCA: Run but damn well close. 2 issues in, the reader is still saying WTF? The book makes no sense and really has nothing to do with whats going on in the DCU. Hey Didiot, why should me or my customers care about this book? I love Nemesis, Rick Flag and Amanda Waller. I have every issue of Suicide Squad and wish DC would trade them (but not in the horrible Showcase – I want color dammit) But this book is not that, not close and never will be. Sad thing is, trees died for this…

Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam #5 came out. Yes this book has a steady release date like Legion of 3 Worlds does (and Ambush Bug). A “Whenever the hell they release it” date. This issue was NOT worth the wait. What was the reason it’s 3 months late? What happened to Mike Kunkle? Byron Vaughns does a horrible Kunkle impersonation. The art is bad. The story is eh. This isssue took a huge nosedive. What did the Didiot do this time that he’s even screwing up the kids line???

My last book of crap is Action Comics #878. I really like Greg Rucka. I think his run on Wonder Woman was one of the best. I loved his Checkmate. I am really looking forward to his Detective. His Action has been horrible. The bait and switch of the promo images to the armored versions and the really thin premise of this book make it a low on the stack of reading. This issue was horrendous as soon as I opened the cover to when I shut it. The best part of the book was when I finished. The art in this book hurt my eyes, it was painfully awful.

Hey Geeks…

Kinda sucky week for books, the next two weeks are crazy tho!

2 Bat books come in this week, Batman by local Judd Winick and Ed Benes and Red Robin by Chris Yost (writer of my favorite book, X-Force) and Ramon Bachs. Gee, I wonder who is wearing the new costume… hmmmm… Who is this super hero? sarge? NO! Rosemary the telephone operator? No way man! Henry the mild mannered janitor? Nope. Is it Tim Drake? Maybe!! Those that have been waiting for the Final Crisis to be collected, the wait is over, the hardcover comes out this week. Marvel has a large week but not a lot of power hitters, mostly single hits. We got a (traced) Uncanny X-Men, a not traced X-Factor, Amazing Spiderman and Deadpool. Spidey is my top of the pile this week. This will be the third part to an Amazing storyline. There is a wedding of a Parker, a new baby on the way, a new symbol of America dressed in red, white and blue armed with a shield. Old friendships tested and just in time for Fathers Day – daddy issues! Those who whined and cried and swore they would never read Spiderman again are missing out on some great great stories. Oh and a little book called the Walking Dead comes in. Pick up the trades and get caught up on one of the best indie books out there. Yes it is that good.

Happy Reading Geeks…

Reviews for you's

  • May. 23rd, 2009 at 11:18 AM

Hey Geeks,

First off let me apologize for the lack of posting. Going to try and get better about it. I'll be posting on Mondays the weeks new releases and then some reviews later on in the week.

Second, this month marks our 3rd year of being open! Yup, time flies when yer having fun and nothing could be more fun than reading comic books.

Third, how about some reviews of this weeks books?

To start off this weeks books is going to be a sentence I never would have thought I'd be writing. The best book this week was The Punisher #5. Actually all 5 issues have been amazing. I don't read the MAX imprint version of this book. I like my Marvel universe to feel cohesive and having the Punisher right in the middle of Dark Reign is awesome. The first 4 pages are the best I've read in a LONG time. The whole arc is about the Punisher trying to kill Norman Osborn who gets the Sentry to protect him. Now Frank (the Punisher) is on the run and Normie gets the Hood to do the dirty work and take down Frank. The kicker is who is helping the Hood. In this issue the Punisher goes to the Hood to take him out and finds...well, read it to find out. You also get a little more backstory on the Hood and how he “builds” his army. Great fun, gritty and it ties into the whole Marvel Universe. Couldn't ask for more from a book.

Another great book (it has been for some time) is Thunderbolts. Norman's dark ops team adds a new member in this issue. The characters, for being nobodies, are slowly being fleshed out. Andy Diggle wrote some down time in this issue (don't worry there is still action) where we learn a little bit more about the Ghost and Headsman. I hope we continue to learn about these characters and they are not just fodder. Ghost is creepy and cool and cares (gasp) about his teammate, but why? I can't say I am too happy about the new member but hopefully Mr. Diggle will make me care. Bonus points cuz Songbird will be returning! I still want her as an Avenger. While it isn't perfect, it is a top of the stack book when it comes out.

Once again, Amazing Spider-Man deserves the name. The book is amazing. Yes it's not consistently amazing but more than not, it really is a good read. The new version of the Vulture is Kah-reeepy. He is a vigilante that preys on mob members and criminals and who happens to to have a nasty case of acid spit. Barry Kitson and Mike McKone are on their A game with the art. Peter is not having a good day and he realizes whats really going on in his mind. The fact his greatest enemy is in charge of everything is really f'ing him up. Really good stuff.

Other honorable mentions would be Captain America #50 (Bucky's B'day)and Agents of Atlas #5 (vs New Avengers).

I really wish I could find more than a couple of DC books to like but it's hard. Marvel is hitting it while DC keeps missing.

This week I really liked Superman/Batman #60. This title has either been a mess or kinda readable. This issue is the shining beacon in the murky DC waters. All because it is a mash up book. The strange world the heroes find themselves in has the Justice Titans to save the day. Gothamopolis has Star Canary, HawkBeast, Aquaborg, Night Lantern, Flash and Donna Wonder to look over them. Areally fun and enjoyable book. The art is by Francis Manapul (that did the Legion towards the end and will be on the new Adventure book) and his drawings are real purty. For real tho, great stuff.

Now for the, it was kinda good...

Supergirl #41 concludes the Who is Supergirl arc. Last issue we find out who she is and in this issue we learn little else. Sterling Gates has taken this crapfest book and made it really readable. But I feel the reveal was very lackluster. Hopefully we'll get some backstory on why. This issue loses a few points because I miss the great pencils of Jamal Igle. Why couldn't he finish the last issue of the arc? Not a great ending, yet way better than the previous writers had done.

Brave and the Bold was good up until the last page. Why is it “gay” is still an acceptable put down? When Magog says to Booster, “Who's your boyfriend?” I got a little pissed. I was really enjoying the book too. The negative connotations of that statement got me. It added nothing to the book and was not needed. Ugh.

Battle for the Cowl#3. Um who didn't see that coming? Tony Daniel tried, bless him, I mean what's he to do? Didiot needed something to fill in the gap between RIP and the all new Batman month in June. I can't say I hated it, cuz it has some good moments but overall was it needed? The first 2 page spread, he evokes his inner Jim Lee or rather tries. Why is it in comics that the girls fight or talk with their asses? The Huntress and Black Canary poses are so ... so ... dumb and unnatural. On the fence with this one.

The Final Crisis Afterthoughts have been a letdown. I reeealy wanted to like Run and like Coug said, it should be called Run Away as fast as you can(and this is one of the new co-writers of the once great JSA). Escape also should be How can I escape this crap? Dance, this weeks FCA book, is like Dancing with the madeupforacrisis Stars and would get a 1 from Bruno Tonioli.

The WORST book I have read in a veryveryvery long time is Vigilante #6. I liked the relaunch of Vigilante #1-4 but this crossover into “Deathcrap” between the Titans books is bad. B.A.D. I cannot put into words how bad this was. Panels make no sense with the word bubbles, Sloppy writing and bad art. The whole idea was bad from the start. Thanks again Didiot for crapping on a good character.

I have a customer who has dropped a lot of DC books because they are just getting so bad. I agree. While there are good ones, it seems the tunnel vision and lack of a constant quality is hurting DC. Didiot has to stop relying on the “big” event and bring the focus back to the books. The whole Titans line is in need of serious help. ASAP. Batman is getting a “relaunch” next month. Superman is off world for another 9 or so months (based on New Krypton) Wonder Woman is plodding along. They struck gold with Secret Six. Why does that book work? No gimmicks. The latest BFTC “tie-in” issue was great because neither wanted the cowl and Ragdoll is the greatest character. Green Arrow Black Canary has been a wreck with savers dropping the title on a daily basis. This new writer got rid of the best part of the book, the Team Arrow with Mia and Connor. This made the book (and Ollie) feel more organic. The new villain is lame and why is it that married people can't be happy? Both here and over in the Suckage League of America. People can be happy, can't they? Look at Sue and Ralph, oh wait, their dead. Ok, um... Lois and Clark, oh he's not around. How about the Hawks? No wait they never married and their dead, what, oh thats right, it was a different set of Hawks that died. I got it! Liberty Bell and Hourman. Finally a happily married couple. Whatever. I forgot my point. Doesn't matter. Like a friend said today, it comes in cycles. Right now, Marvel has better stories. But that may change in another 6 months, or whenever the Didiot is gone. We do get Blackest Night this summer, DC's version of Marvel Zombies. Whoo Hoo!!! (Really tho, the Green Lantern titles have been IMO the best DC has put out in a while. Anyone who wants a fun read should pick it up.)

I've rambled enough. Be good and happy reading.

Later Geeks!

New Releases 3-25

  • Mar. 22nd, 2009 at 9:09 PM

Hey Geeks!

It’s a good Marvel week again. We got 3 Avenger’s titles and 5 X- Titles! If you’re looking for a great series to start and like space stuff, I suggest GUARDIANS OF GALAXY TP VOL 01 LEGACY. This book is consistently great and has consistent characterization plus it has a talking raccoon! The new issue is out this week. DC has some titles of interest (not many but…) Superman, which has been good, Oracle gets a mini (I just hope not the use of her legs), Top 10 (which I don’t understand the need for a special? Why not just add an issue to the mini and make it 5 not 4?) And part 823 of the Rise of the Olympian in Wonder Woman. In the Indie funny books we get a buttload of cool things. Proof (pick up the trades!!!) the Muppet Show gets a comic as does the Incredibles, Hack/Slash gets an Omnibus (for those who like horror books) and Jesus gets a comic book. American Jesus Vol 1 comes out. Written by Mark Millar (Kick Ass, Civil War) American Jesus tells the story of a 12 year old who discovers he’s Jesus.

Something for everyone. Here’s the new releases…

Hey Geeks,

In my last post I was kinda harsh on DC. They are doing some pretty crappy things but I would like to focus on the things that they are doing right.

Dc has a few mini events going on thru out the DCU.

There’s the Battle for the Cowl, which isn’t really a full one gladiator battle but it sounds good as a tagline. Who is going to pick up the slack now that Gotham has no protector??? Well actually Gotham has a few dozen heroes watching over it but I guess the bad guys are only afraid of a guy dressed as a bat. So DC cancels Birds of Prey, Nightwing (which was a great book) and Robin and replaces it with mini’s and one-shots and the 3 issue Battle for the Cowl. Oracle gets a mini (3/25) DC says “Part 1 of 3-part story that will change the life of Oracle forever!”

Over in the Superverse, we have Superman reunited with his people and has moved to the World of Krypton (a 12 issue mini) SO who is the protector of Metropolis??? Well let me tell you. Mon-El, who once had lead poisoning, is conveniently saved by Braniac 5, who left a liquid for him to drink. Now that Supes is gone, he has taken on the name, Jonathon Kent and watches over the city. Over in Action, we have Flamebird and Nightwing (no not Nightwing that was Robin but the new Nightwing). Who’s identity is … maybe the new Superboy.

Then comes what might be the best thing that’s happened to DC in a LONG time.

The Blackest Night. There is a color war between the different corps. Haven’t read a Green Lantern book in a while? It’s time. Gone are the days of just the Green Lantern Corps vs. Sinestro. Now not only does Sinestro have his own yellow ringed corps (fear), there are Blue (hope), Red (rage), Violet (love), Orange (avarice), Indigo (compassion) and Black (death) Corps. It has begun. On May 2nd , Free Comic Book Day, there will be a Blackest Night #0. Pick it up.

There are some great things going on in both books and I really suggest that if you are only reading the main GL book and not the GL Corps book, you do. This is the (green) light of the DC right now.

Oh and once more I’ll say Secret 6 is always an entertaining and great book. This should be on your pull list!

To all the Barry Allen fans – April 1st Rebirth.

See it’s not all bad….

New Releases

  • Mar. 17th, 2009 at 1:15 PM

Hey Geeks...

Here are this weeks new releases... it's a huge X Week. Feast or famine when it comes to Marvel. Hope your hungry this week…Once again DC the megapowercompany has a pitiful 7 titles coming out, one being a kids title. This is how DC rolls lately; maybe someday it can sit at the big kids table. Fire a certain Didiot and hire someone who cares about the medium and fans. Next week, not counting kids we get 9 (I really count 8 because no one reads the War that no one cares About book).
People criticize Marvel for putting out so many books. I personally don’t understand why we need 10 different Wolverine books with him in 4 other titles, I really thought they were going to try and stop this. But with his new movie coming out, it’s all about the short hairy canucklehead. Back to my thought.

Marvel does a good job at giving people a choice. There are amazing space stories (Guardians of the Galaxy, Nova and the new War of Kings – all 3 great books) There are the Dark Reign titles, which for the most part have been really good. There is a plethora of X to choose from. Dark and gritty your cup a tea? Daredevil, Captain America and Iron Fist are good. Want Avengers? We got 4 of em.

While DC had Final Crisis which did exactly what to continuity??? Oh wait, we be shown later in a series of Afterthoughts, I mean Aftermaths coming out in MAY. Customers should care why? If something big happens, I as a reader would like to see it. Ideas should grow organically, weaving and building up to something that pays off and has an impact then, not 4 months later. It feels forced and fake. They keep spouting the same, “oh wait, things will make sense later” crap. While over at Marvel, Secret Invasion happened. It was 8 issues that things happened in issue 1,2 and 8, the rest filler, fun filler at times. What I see it the fallout. It has made the landscape of the Marvel Universe a fun place to read about. They took the snow globe, which was looking clear and pretty and shook it, hard. Yeah both companies had IMO crappy Limited Series but only one paid off. I think the difference between the 2 companies really shows with the whole Dark Reign concept. People always bitch about the next big event but really you need it once in a while. Because of Secret Invasion, new and old readers did pick up new titles. People were interested in Dark Avengers and what happened to Iron Man, who was once the most loved and popular man on Earth and in one second became the most wanted. Readers want to see what the “real” Avengers thought of these fake ones. This wasn’t the case for Final Crisis. Why is it Marvel can produce 4 Avengers titles, all distinctly different, with the Avengers property while DC can’t launch multiple books. Yes there is a second Justice League someday. Again, key word is someday. Both Superman and Batman (and the poor Titans) have multiple books but that’s about it. What does Marvel do that DC doesn’t?

Oh and as one of Judd Winick’s last remaining fans on earth (I feel that way some days) this weeks Titans really sucked. He did not write it - Titans has dropped to the way bottom of my reading stack. Why DC why do you hate me so much!!! (I will save the Titans rant for another day, poor poor Titans and teen, what happened to thee…?)

happy place...

  • Mar. 6th, 2009 at 1:04 PM

I have had a rollercoaster day...

Happy Place - Girl Scout cookies on 18th and Castro... mmmm thin mints

bad place - I just found out Anoop made it in as well... why? Do we reallllly need another Sanjaya in the competition? The judges said it. It's not a singing competition...

Whatever...

Oh and I'll probably get bad reviews on Yelp because I don't want to pay them 300 a month for their program... they already took one of my good reviews off...

Who Watches the Watchmen? I did...

  • Mar. 6th, 2009 at 2:02 AM

We saw Watchmen tonight. It was a special preview screening from the Cartoon Art Museum. They are having an exhibit with costumes and props from the movie. The proceeds from the movie went to the museum. My geeks and I couldn’t pass on the chance to see it. So we rounded up the group and off we went...one word. WOW. If you have never read the book and want to see a great movie – then go. If you have read the book – still go. I remember reading it when it came out and I was one of “those” people who thought it shouldn’t be a movie. I have purposely not re-read the trade because I wanted to enjoy the movie. Any of the X-films – ESPECIALLY X3 has been a major disappointment cuz you sit thru the film and go – that’s not right they don’t do that. Well this was one film I wanted to enjoy. If you haven’t read the book, I suggest you do after the movie. Really, spend the $20, it’s worth it.

My only complaints (funny enough isn’t the changing of the story) is that the music was heavy handed as was some of the revelations. The main theme (which I’m not giving away) is part of the fun of discussing it – meaning the main point to the story. They had to beat it into you…

But it is a fun and gory and violent, holy crap VIOLENT movie. I laughed while my friends turned away from certain parts. It is not for kids AT ALL! Any parent who takes a child to this should have the child taken away. Bones snapping, blood flying and seeping and squishing and wow. Mind F*&k. Really. Go see it.

Oh and I approve the Wild Card picks - SO glad that certain people didn’t make it in. So far it’s going to be a great season. As long as 2 people don’t make it far into the competition, I’m not naming names yet. Last year was a freakin joke hell the top 2 were losers, this year there are people that can sing. Lil is my AI. She’s the only one that could get my money today.

As for the funny books. Not a lot grabbed me this week. Both number ones were good but kinda slow. New Krypton and War of Kings were slow out of the gate. They set up the stories; still gunna read them but not a grab ya issue for either. Anything with a Titans attached is pure shite. Terror Titans was ugh glad it’s over. Deadpool felt like something was missing. Same with Secret 6, this was a lackluster issue. It still one of DC’s best titles (considering DC has a ton of crap it’s producing) It was just a…really that’s how yer ending it, ok…

So - go see Watchmen. Come by and pick up the book and see how it was meant to end.

Enjoy…

Wonder-Con

  • Mar. 2nd, 2009 at 1:49 AM

It’s just a simple fact that you can’t seem to handle me
No matter how you act with them you can’t handle me
It’s just a simple fact that you can’t seem to handle me
Don’t matter how you act with them you can’t handle me
You got me, feel you got my back
But you’re a selfish narcissistic psycho
Freaking bootlicking Nazi pimp and
You can’t handle me

thanks Robyn…

Wonder-Con was this weekend. We had a booth there. Our first one and certainly NOT our last. We learned a LOT. Had a good weekend, got our name out there.

We will be going into our 4th year at the Castro store and people are still surprised we are there. In this economy and with the news of another store closing this April, I am quite proud of the fact we are doing well. Despite the fucking haters and nay-sayers, we are STILL THERE! Fuck all the people who thought the Castro was no place for a comic store.

I am looking forward to this year. I want to support my fellow fags and their comics – their dreams and their hopes. We went to the Gay comics panel and listened. I was mentioned a few and want to be there for those fags who want a place in stores.

Johnny and Mark were there. (Gravity Faggot) They have their adult comic (in store now).
As was Brian Andersen (So Super Duper) He has such a big heart and a big personality.

They are all great guys and really deserve your support. 2 different types of books but both really amazing.

We all have dreams and for every person who slams your dream there is someone who is willing to lend a hand. Willing to support you and say yes you can. I remember those who supported and those who didn’t. I was slammed online when I first opened and comments were made that I wouldn’t last a year. Well bitches, fuck you, cuz I’m still here and baby I ain’t goin nowhere. My support is strong. Both internal and external. I thank those who have been by my side since day one. I love you. For the rest, well…

Some things to watch for at Whatever:

Deviant U (by me and Desmond Miller)
Agents of the Coven (in my store this week by Desmond Miller)

So Super Duper #7 ( in my store this week by Brian Andersen)
