AVENGERS INITIATIVE #30 - This book has been good since the beginning. I like that the not so well known get a chance to shine in a book. For an "event" book it doesn't feel like it (unlike Ms. Marvel which is just a string of events bound by the character) I really suggest picking up the trades and get caught up.
BLACKEST NIGHT #5 (OF 8) Wow. This is how you do an "event". Great story, great art and I want more. Even if you are unfamiliar with DC, you can enjoy this book. We've had many RISE in this book and now we get DIE! Love it.
DETECTIVE COMICS #859 - If you are looking for a book that tackles real world issues (gays in the military) and some of the best art in comics then pick up this book. Lesbians and were-creatures, 2 great heroines and a strong supporting cast = Detective Comics. 1LT Daniel Choi even assists in the research of this issue. Must read.
GREEN LANTERN #48 (BLACKEST NIGHT) Read before Blackest Night #5. Joke as people do about the Rainbow Lanterns, Planeteers or whatever else you wanna say, this book still kicks all sorts of ass. Each color representative has a voice and you kinda feel bad for even the evilest among them.
GUARDIANS OF GALAXY #20 Love this book as well. Sad last issue, mourning still, the group continues on to find another threat. Funny and sad this book continues to be one of the books you should be reading but are not.
HULK #17 ...??? 17 issues in and I really don't care anymore who the Rulk is. Way to drag out an idea Marvel...
JUSTICE LEAGUE CRY FOR JUSTICE #5 (OF 7) O.K. This all happens before Blackest Night and is in continuity and you have shown some of the repercussions in JLA (Plastic Man and Vixen) so how does Red Arrow fit in??? I hope they explain better later on. Story is wonky but art is beautiful.
JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #39 (BLACKEST NIGHT) YA GOT THAT VIBEOLOGY THAT V-I-B-E-OLOGY. I was glad he was dead. Lame character, lame JLA era. Fun BN story and filler tho. BUT DC's Editorial 2 weeks in a row have screwed up. Arthur Curry is Aquaman not Doctor Light who's name is - careful it's tough - Arthur LIGHT. Really DC. Maybe if Eddie Berganza would worry about proofing books instead of writing them he would have caught it.
JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #33 OMG this book has gotten so bad it hurts to read it. AND starting this week there will be 2 JSA books. Maybe they should stick to one being real good instead of 2 crappy ones.
NEW MUTANTS #7 XN I love the writing and respect that the writer has for these kids. Heh kids, they were when I started reading this years ago. While they are no longer "new" mutants I want this book to be around for a long time. The art is getting better (the page of Doug's life was really nice) But he needs to add some backgrounds at times.
TEEN TITANS #77 (BLACKEST NIGHT) Warning the characters on the cover do not appear in this book. That said - Good thing cuz it was the first Teen Titans book I have loved in months! It's all about the Slade family. They all show up Ravager 1 and 2, Wintergreen, Adeline and ...! Loved it (mostly cuz none of the boring teens show up and cuz it was written by my new fave Titan writer J.T. Krul who also wrote the Titans Blackest Night mini.)
THOR GIANT SIZE FINALE (BY JMS) #1 Coug is a huge Thor fan and he didn't like this issue at all. We waited months for this??? A reprint in the back to make the giant size "giant size" nope didn't work.
UNCANNY X-MEN #517 Ugh... Even worse Greg Land art, this time starting on the cover. Is it that hard to draw legs? Psylocke's legless boobalicious body floats in front of Namor. While there are some positives on the writing (a big plus to how Rogue kicked Predator X ass and Storm doing something) the art ruins any fun I could have had with reading this issue. Floating head Cyclops and the horrible porn shots thru out - the Boom Boom panel is one of most horrific panels in the book. I am sick of seeing the same model's head with different colored hair in every book. That and the screaming face (where Rogue is beating up her Predator X) is just recycled poses. Had that action scene been done by a different more talented artist, it could have been amazing. Here it's poses on a colored background. His tracing of the Cuckoos is horrid as well, just re trace to make a twin. Lazy. Too bad cuz this could have been a kick ass issue if only the artist could perform the task. There are so many artists trying to break into comics that do a helluva better job than Land...

This week had no Great books, some good ones and many were ugh's...
ADVENTURE COMICS #4 (BLACKEST NIGHT) - I think they need to put Prime away on the shelf and leave him. Overexposed, 5 "events" in a row is more than enough. If he "dies" next issue, leave him be. As for the Legion back up, waiting till they get more than 8 pages. They should have a full 22. Sad, very sad. Still don't like the generic art tho.
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #612 - I have been waiting for this arc for months and how disappointed was I when I opened it up. They picked a really sub-par artist for this epic storyline. Ugh. Bad move on Marvels part.
BATMAN STREETS OF GOTHAM #6 - 2 good stories in one book. I can finally enjoy reading the Manhunter story now that the artist has changed. It was Buffy p2 of the DCU. Now you can tell who people are.
DARK AVENGERS #11 - Slow and nothing happened BUT we did get back story (finally) on Ms. Hand, the lesbian ex-SHIELD agent.
DARK REIGN LIST AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ONE-SHOT - The Lists have been less than stellar for the $4 price. Only the Hulk and Punisher have brought something new to the table. Spiderman the List is both good and bad. The reprints have to stop tho, bad excuse to add the extra buck.
FLASH REBIRTH #5 (OF 6) We waited this long (3 months) for this??? Ugh.
INCREDIBLE HULK #604 - Series continues to be good. Banner's son want to kill the Hulk and Banner is helping by training him. Love the art and the writing.
JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA 80 PAGE GIANT #1 - Mistake on page 2 made me care enough not to read the restof the book. What's up with the editors??
MIGHTY AVENGERS #31 - Someone get me a gun, I need to put this title out of it's misery! Slott and Gage are much better writers than this book shows. Read Absolution (Gage) or Avengers Initiative (Slott). I would leave this arc unspoken and off my resume if I was them.
OUTSIDERS #24 (BLACKEST NIGHT) Big problem with this issue. It makes no sense. For 5 months not one "zombie" has broken it's programming yet Terra can (remember these are not the real bodies just downloaded memories) so a big WTF???
PUNISHER #11 - You should read his List first. Fun story.
REALM OF KINGS - ok...and this ties into it how???
REALM OF KINGS INHUMANS #1 (OF 5) Another ok.
SPIDER-WOMAN #3 I really really really want to like this book but some unknown force keeps me from doing so...
SUPERGIRL #47 This event is going on way tooooo long.
SUPERMAN BATMAN #66 (BLACKEST NIGHT) This horrible issue. Me hate Scott Kolins. (I loved the issue and Scott Kolins) Only complaint is keeping the Bizzaro speak straight. It gets a little confusing at times.
THUNDERBOLTS #138 - I love this title yet the last two issues have been very eh. Last issue was atrocious and it went way off the tracks. This issue is trying hard to get back on track. Try harder please...
TINY TITANS #22 - 22 issues in and it was getting a little old. This one made me laugh again. Fun read.
X-MEN LEGACY #229 - Love the art but the story could be more.
Next week has so many books coming out - hopefully one will have the wow factor cuz this week didn't...

Reviews by Jase
Batgirl #4
By Bryan Q. Miller, Lee Garbett, and Trevor Scott
This book is really growing on me. At first I wasn’t sure about Steph as the new Batgirl, but I like her in this role more and more as I read each issue. Further more, I think the relationship she has with Barbara is wonderful and makes more sense than the one she had with Cassandra. Stephanie and Barbara have far more in common than Barbara ever did with Cassandra and I hope they touch on this in later issues. In addition to the main story, it’s really nice to see Bryan Miller bringing in Wendy from the Teen Titans. The interaction between her and Barbara was my favorite part of this issue and reminds me why I love the character of Barbara Gordon so much. She can be tough when she needs to be, but she can also be one of the most caring people in the DC universe. At a time when so many comics are all about being as dark as possible, it’s nice to have a book out there that is fun, light and entertaining.
Green Lantern Corps #42
By Peter J. Tomasi, Patrick Gleason, and Buchman
This issue was one hell of a roller coaster ride. One thing I love about this book is the fact that it isn’t being shoved aside during Blackest Night and dealing with minor plot points, but it’s being placed center stage along with the main Green Lantern title and the Blackest Night issues as well. Seeing the GL’s fight old friends and loved ones is heartbreaking, but what really drives the story even deeper is facing all their failures from the past. Furthermore, hearing about them from the animated corpses of their old friends and loved ones makes it even more powerful. The GL’s are battling themselves as much as they are battling the Black Lanterns and this is giving us some great moments in the story. This issue also gives us a peek at another angle of the Black Lanterns as we discover more about their plan now that their power levels have reached 100%. The ending of this issue came as a major shock to me, but before getting too emotional, I’ll wait to see how the rest of Blackest Night turns out.
Green Lantern #47
By Geoff Johns, Dough Manhnke, and Christian Alamy
This title has quickly shot up to the number one position on the list of my favorite comics. Geoff Johns is a master at using the history of a character to further it without erasing or conveniently forgetting about past continuity. I love what he has done with the history of Abin Sur and how he has taken advantage of Green Lantern continuity to expand the entire universe of Green Lantern to make his run on Green Lantern a wonderful read every issue. In this issue we get a bit more of what he set up in the last two issues with Abin Sur, his sister and Sinestro. Johns is really working to make Sinestro a great character, full of depth and rich in history. The way he reacts to the black lanterns in this issue stands in sharp contrast to the way Hal Jordan reacts and it is simple bits like this that make these characters so strong. (It’s the small details that are making Johns run on Green Lantern the strongest one yet.) By the end of this issue, we are one step closer to a full multi-colored lantern team and we are given some great development with the Red Lanterns.

A few short reveiws of this weeks books...
ACTION COMICS #883 - When is Superman coming back? I was on board for the whole tracking down Zod's agents but this seems to be taking forever! The storylines got sidetracked by the Supergirl/Reactron arc and now I just don't care. But the back up Captain Atom was actually interesting to the bigger picture that's been crossing the S'books.
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #611 - One of this weeks best books. I didn't read the last arc, cuz, I just don't care about Ben Reilly or Kane. This issue is back to where Spidey's been - Amazing. This had everything and made me laugh out loud many times. Great art, great fun. Lady Stilt-Man - dumbest and lamest yet funniest villain that's been in funny books in a while! Must Read.
BATGIRL #4 - I am clearly not who is book is for. Don't like it, don't like her. The story and art isn't even engaging to me. Painful.
BATMAN #693 I love Tony Daniel's art. I happen to think he shouldn't write and draw it. Panels at times made no sense and his writing didn't help explain any. Mr. Winick where did you go?
BATMAN AND ROBIN #6 The cover was the best thing about this book. Prince's Purple Rain - just when you think it couldn't get fruitier.
BOOSTER GOLD #26 (BLACKEST NIGHT) - Great book and you get a free Orange Lantern ring with it. Heartfelt and emotional not even the annoying new Blue Beetle could ruin it. Must Read.
CABLE #20 - Can we please end this whole Hope storyline ...please...pretty please?
CHRONICLES OF WORMWOOD LAST BATTLE #2 (OF 6) - 2 issues in and it's moving sooo slow. Let's get on with it please. At least the big bad made his appearance (on the last page!)
DAREDEVIL #502 - Loved it.
DARK X-MEN #1 (OF 5) - Had problems with it.
DEADPOOL #17 Loved it. Chickens really???
GREEN ARROW BLACK CANARY #26 Why???
GREEN LANTERN CORPS #42 (BLACKEST NIGHT) I say it every month. The artist does a great injustice to the story. Big pages lose their impact with this art. A "death" of a major character feels flat. This was the first issue I felt was a must read for non GLC readers BUT we'll see how long dead stays dead in this world of Black Lanterns.
JSA VS KOBRA #6 (OF 6) I was a huge supporter of this when it started. Loved the writing and the art. 6 issues in and I'm glad it's over. It went no where. What was the purpose of the mini??? It didn't end! Disappointing.
REALM OF KINGS IMPERIAL GUARD #1 (OF 5) Why? Bad art with a story that was just dumb. This is how they follow up War of Kings? Really???
STRANGE #1 (OF 4) Good story wrapped in bad art.
SWORD #1 (MARVEL) OK story with really bad art. Beast is a cat (that's bad enough) not a freakin horse, people. How did that make it thru editorial. I know art is subjective but not that loosy goosy! BUT the back up story featuring a pissed off Lockheed was great. He loves his Kitty and wants her back.
TITANS #19 - Ugh. It was a very ok story. How much longer are they going to strech out this one issue a person crap and start telling Titans stories? There is an "S" at the end of the title ya know Didiot!
UNCANNY X-MEN FIRST CLASS #5 (OF 8) Ugh...
WALKING DEAD #67 Wow didn't see that coming. Another A+ from Kirkman and Adlard. Pick up the Compendium which collects the first 8 trades and get caught up on an amazing book NOW! You will not regret it!
X-BABIES #2 (OF 4) Ugh Why? I like the babies but they have made it unbearable to read.
X-FORCE #21 This is my favorite book and this issue shows why no one but Yost and Kyle should write it. When they're done with this :( send them to Uncanny... and the beautiful art of Claytin Crain. This book is like Christmas to me. The one page of Banshee is gorgeous!
X-MEN FOREVER #11 Much like Batgirl, this book is not for me. Stiff writing and poor dialogue makes this book tough to get thru. At least the art is do-able.

I Want You To Confess...
http://www.drunkduck.com/Eves_Apple/
It's been a while since I posted some thoughts on the funny books that have come out. I personally have thought there has been a ton of crap and a few really great things.
Here is what I loved these past weeks.
Doom Patrol #4.
It was a Blackest Night tie-in and part of the Ring Promotion, this was for a Yellow Lantern Ring. I've read a few reviews and gone thru some message boards about this issue. As a long time Doom Patrol fan, I really liked this issue. There are some teams in the DCU which have a history for members to die. The Titans, JLI, Suicide Squad and the Doom Patrol to name a few. This book is the perfect place for dead teammates to appear. I've read all the different versions and loved when they re launched the book using Arani, Cliff, Joshua and Val. I liked the 3 new kids as well that joined, then Invasion happened and that's when Grant Morrison took over and the book became less spandex superhero and took a very strange odd Morrison twist. I think that's one reason why I liked this issue so much. History and Present in one book, done right. From the moment you open the book to the end "Cliff"hanger, I loved it. It helps that I love the art of Justiniano, he is perfect for the creepy look of the Black Lanterns. Worth a read - Yes. And you get a cool Sinestro ring.
Necrosha One Shot and New Mutants #5.
This is how you do a crossover. Your first issue has 3 separate stories leading into their respective titles giving the reader a tease of what's to come. Between the gorgeous dark art of Clayton Crain in the X-Force story, the return of many classic X- Friends and foes and the reveals you get in this issue it's well worth the $3.99 cover price. The only complaint (not by me) is that there is a need for some - who is that boxes. This crossover is paper joy to us who have been reading for years and years and know the X-Lore but to new readers you just need to find a friend to do some 'splainin or use Wiki to help.
Along with this issue is New Mutants #5. Fresh out of the grave, Doug is back and the reunion with his former friends doesn't go that well. In fact it's the last reunion for one Mutie. Great issue, but the art lacks in some. Still a great book and what an upgrade in powers for the newly resurrected Cypher.
Secret Six # 15
I have every issue of the Suicide Squad. I loved that book. So what you ask? John Ostrander wrote that and he wrote this issue as well. Taking a shot at a character he helped define. Jim Calafiore is the artist. After reading this issue I want the Didiot to put these 2 on an ongoing Suicide Squad book.
While it does feel odd that after the last arc they choose a one off to follow up, a breather issue was good. Maybe an arc of 6 issues each focusing on a member would be cool, I would love an all Ragdoll issue! This issue focuses on Deadshot who is a killer and wants to kill more. It's an interesting character piece and while it doesn't affect the main story, it's still an enjoyable read.

Justice League of America #38
By James Robinson, Mark Bagley and Rob Hunter.
This issue read like complete filler. I’ve been away from the Justice League for a while now, but was excited to come back when I read about the new line up. Even though those characters haven’t gotten together yet, I find myself wondering if I even care after this issue. With the exception of the first four pages dealing with Blue Jay, the book felt forced and Despero’s attack on the League felt unnecessary. I don’t understand what purpose it served other than to fill up a few pages. In fact, I didn’t see much point for the entire issue unless something more comes out of those first four pages. Justice League should be a flagship title for DC, but right now it seems more like an afterthought and I find it sad that only after 38 issues it is already floundering.
Spider-Woman #2
By Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev
This book is making me a Marvel convert. Bendis does a great job of getting the reader into the head of his main character. The way Jessica addresses the reader in her narration is clever and it helps to give the story a different feel than the average comic book. The opening pages also do a great job of allowing the reader to see the events as Jessica sees them and this makes the action feel more immediate than it would if it were told in a more traditional way. We don’t know much more about what’s going on than she does and this allows us to be surprised by the events as they unfold, making the story a wonderful read up to this point. Spider-Woman is defiantly a book worth checking out!
Superman: Blackest Night #3
By James Robinson, Eddy Barrows, Allan Goldman Ruy Jose and Eber Ferreira
It was great to see some other characters shine in this issue. I’m normally not a big fan of Krypto, but the way he was used this time around was well done and if he were used more often like this, I wouldn’t complain. I liked the fact that Ma Kent stood her ground and took charge of her situation rather than waiting to be rescued by Conner or Clark. Instead, she confronted the Black Lantern Lois and showed how resourceful she was when she commanded Krypto to “fetch” the black ring from Black Lantern Lois.
Additionally, it was nice to see Supergirl’s mother acting more like a leader, but the outcome on New Krypton felt like a bit of a letdown as Supergirl didn’t get a moment to shine. However, I’m hoping that this will be a positive step in the relationship Supergirl has with her mother. This also leads me to my one main complaint about the Superman: Blackest Night series, and that is that the Superman Family feels unconnected. Supergirl feels like the stepchild of the Superman family right now and I hope this is addressed sooner rather than later. I understand the need to establish her as her own character, but it seems more like she has been made to be an outsider to the Kent family since she was reintroduced. Superboy feels much more connected to the family and I don’t think this takes away from his solo adventures at all. I don’t think Kara should live on the Kent farm, but a little more interaction between her and the rest of the Superman family would be great to see.

Reviews by Jase
(It’s all about issues numbered 3 this time around.)
Batgirl #3
By Bryan Q. Miller, Lee Garbett and Trevor Scott
This story has really taken off and Bryan Miller has hit a nice groove with this issue. The interaction between Steph and Barbara in this issue was excellent and Stephanie’s internal moments were perfectly in character. (I loved Steph’s reaction when Babs called the Batgirl costume “Cassandra’s”.) The only downside of this issue was Barbara’s change of heart. It felt a bit rushed, but it’s a small complaint. I’m glad to see her come around as it would seem that she has much more in common with Stephanie than she did with Cassandra and her mentorship of Stephanie is one of the main reason’s I think this book is going to keep getting better from here. Stephanie, like Barbara did when she first came on the scene as Batgirl, is trying to prove herself in a club of (mostly) boys. Babs had to do it on her own, and Steph did the same as the Spoiler. As much as I think Cassandra got the bad end of the stick on being Batgirl, I can’t help but be excited to see where the “new” Batgirl goes from here.
Blackest Night: Batman #3
By Peter J. Tomasi, Ardian Syaf, and Vicente Cifuentes
Another great tie in! The creative team on this book has a great handle on these characters and spared no opportunity to show us how different a Batman Richard Grayson is compared to Bruce Wayne. He is a much more compassionate Batman and it could be “heard” in his voice, as well as seen in a lot of the artwork. The art team of Syaf and Cifuentes made use of great details, such as Batman placing a hand on Red Robin’s shoulder when he asked him if he was okay after the plane crash. He did it again another two times before the issue had ended. Physical touch is something that is subtle to the eye, but it’s huge in terms of body language and really shows a difference in this “new” Batman. As a reader who has faithfully followed both of these former Robins, I couldn’t help but feel emotionally invested in this story. The sense of loss they feel over the death of their families is powerful and their reactions to seeing their parents as Black Lanters was heartbreaking. Anyone hoping to find an “action packed” issue might be disappointed, but I thought this issue was told in exactly the way it should have been. The boys had to outthink their opponents not outfight them and that’s exactly what they did, in true Batman fashion, just the way Bruce taught them.
Adventure Comics #3
By Geoff Johns and Francis Manapul
I’m beginning to think that no one understands these former Titans like Geoff Johns. Adventure Comics #3 dealt with a lot of emotion in a very small space. I loved Conner’s reaction to Tim’s “new” costume. Conner addressed many of the concerns readers have had about Tim’s change and it was great to see it acknowledged by someone so close to him. This issue reminded us that Tim and Conner aren’t just friends, their best friends and the way they open up with one another is great to see. At times it almost seems as if they could be more than “friends” (when looking at moments like this through a “queer lens”) and as a gay reader I’m thankful that it allows me another way to enter a story, but it’s frustrating as well because what seems like a natural next step, doesn’t occur because the characters are “straight”. Conner asking Tim to remove his cowl and telling him he needed a haircut, along with Conner putting his hands on Tim as he reassured him, suggests a level of intimacy between these guys. The final moments of their conversation where they stare at each other is intense and could have been a natural moment for a kiss, but sadly we just get Tim chiming in with “Brice is alive.” I know all this is my “point of view” on the story, but I think that any story that can allow the reader multiple ways to interpret it, is a story done well and that is one of the reason’s this book as been such a fun read up to this point.
