Trinity #2
Written by Kurt Busiek and Fabien Nicieza
Art by Mark Bagley, Art Thibert, Pete Pantazis, Pat Brosseau, Tom Derenick, Wayne Faucher, and Allen Passalaqua
Review by Kenne
What the heck just happened? The first issue started off so well and promising. Then, bam, we get thrown into the middle of some weird stuff that almost makes Grant Morrison sound normal. This is just not right. So not right. Maybe it's because I thought the story was going one way and it turns out to be going another way or maybe it's something else, but I'm just not feeling this issue. I'll keep reading in the hopes that this was just a flukey issue, but I have to say, this is just too early in the game for the story to unravel like this.
Booster Gold
Written by Geoff Johns and Jeff Katz, art by Dan Jurgens, Norm Rapmund, Hi-Fi, and Nick J. Napolitano
Review by Kenne
Oh, yeah, now this is what a DC Comic should be about. There's action that's easy to follow, theirs dramatic deaths that make you grab your heart in pain, there's character development that shows Johns' strong skills as a writer, and there's a wistful ending that's both beautifully done but grabs at the heart strings like nobody's business. My only concern about this title is the eventual day when Geoff Johns moves on to other projects. I can only hope that DC takes their time finding a good writer who is capable of filling Johns' shoes. Maybe that's why Jeff Katz shares the writing credit. If Jeff's writing is this solid, then I wouldn't mind him taking over Booster Gold when Geoff inevitably moves on.
Invincible #50
Written by Robert Kirkman, art by Ryan Ottley, Bill Crabtree, Rus Wooton, Cliff Rathburn, Kelsey Shannon, Cory Walker, and FCO PLascencia
Review by Kenne
Break out the bubbly and shake the noisemakers. Invincible is celebrating a birthday. That's right. Fifty Issues baby!! In today's market, it's like 200 issues in Golden Age terms. Kirkman could have put out an okay story, or he could have decided to not acknowledge this anniversary issue, but instead, he pulled out all the stops to make an already fantastic story even better. In this one issue, Invincible is forced to confront his boss and decide whether he can do what he's told even if he doesn't agree or do what he knows is right even if it means having the government against him. In this story, Kirkman reminds the readers just what kind of a man and hero Invincible is. Make no mistake about it. Invincible might be in his early twenties, but this is a hero who could give Superman a run for his money when it comes to making sacrifices in order to protect the innocent. My only complaint is that we got a super-sized issue, but while the Invincible story was the regular length, the bonus material was for two short stories that I didn't care for. I wanted to read more Invincible.
Trinity #1
Written by Kurt Busiek and Fabian Nicieza; Art by Mark Bagley and Art Thibert, Scott McDaniel and Andy Owens, Tom Derenick and Wayne Faucher and Mike Norton and Jerry Ordway
Review by Kenne
After the success of 52, DC decided that they wanted to keep the weekly comic tradition alive. Their next effort, Countdown, kept the publics interest in weekly comics up enough that at the conclusion of Countdown, we received Trinity, which promises to focus on the DC trinity of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Each issue will feature a main story written by Kurt Busiek with a back up story by Fabien Nicieza, both writers with huge fan bases. The trinity of the weekly comic, a comic focused on the trinity, and a comic written by two fan-favorites, Trinity should be a success for DC regardless of how well the story is received.
In the first issue, we discover the reason for the series as in the main story, Wonder Woman, Batman, and Superman meet to discuss something peculiar that seems to only be affecting the three of them and not any of the other super-heroes in the DC universe. In the back up, two relatively unknown characters meet to discuss something strange that centers around the Trinity, a strange event that they have decided they can use to their own advantage. If they can locate and recruit another, they believe they can become DC's new Trinity.
There's mystery, intrigue, and some down right good characterization going on. The art in the main story was more to my liking than the second story. I liked this first issue. My only concern is that because the story has to fill up 52 issues, it can be good some weeks while others will just be filler material, like most of Countdown and some of 52 was. However, I do have faith in Kurt and Fabien as storytellers and believe they can pull it off. I'll continue to read this series for as long as I enjoy it. If I start getting bored or frustrated, then I'm done, but until then, I'm here for the Trinity long haul.
<Rich's note:
I also thought this was a good first issue. But I also really liked the first month or so of Countdown which I stopped reading long before it ended. So I read on with caution.
What I like about the Trinity concept is it is ONE writer and ONE artist working on it. The thought of one writer vs four different writers makes me feel like it will be a stronger more cohesive story. (I'm also a sucker for connecting covers.) I will continue to read but as a fan of Wonder Woman, I hope Busiek can make her feel like she belongs and not just there to get coffee and snacks- the first time she does, I'm out.>
Noble Causes #34
Story JAY FAERBER
Art & cover YILDIRAY CINAR & RON RILEY
Review by Kenne
I've been a firm follower of this book since even before it debuted. I had like some of what I had read from Jay Faerber when he worked for the Big Two (DC and Marvel), and the idea of a soap opera with superheroes intrigued me. I followed this title religiously through its many volumes, limited series, up to the current volume. I was excited that Jay had decided to jump the series ahead five years with issue #32, and I was hoping that the jump would bring many new readers to the series. However, whether anyone new reads it or not, I'm glad to have the title back, and I'm loving the new direction. There are new characters, new relationships, new mysteries, and new levels of drama that unfold with each page.
Noble Causes is the book that I read because it hits all those "Oh my god" moments that I need when I read comics. This comic is constantly making me curse Jay Faerber at the last page because I then have to wait for the next issue. This is the comic that makes me wish it was a weekly and that every day was new comics day. This is the comic that makes me happy that I still read comics. With art that's fresh and dynamic, Noble Causes is a winner and the sleeper book that not many fans are reading.
JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #16
Written by Geoff Johns and Alex Ross
Art by Fernando Pasarin
Cover by Alex Ross
Review by Kenne
Few comic writers can handle big teams with lots of characters that have tons of backstory and do the story justice. Yet, Geoff Johns can do that with what looks like relative ease. Johns, and his co-plotter Alex Ross, has taken a team that's been around the DCU forever and manages to create stories that are just as fresh and original as things coming from newer titles like Avengers the Initiative or Noble Causes. With JSA, the fans get a chance to see some of their favorite characters interact not only with new characters but characters that are the next generation of heroes.
In this issue, Johns begins the next arc of his series with the arrival of Gog, a being of god-like power. In just a few pages, Johns has created a story that strikes fear and awe into the hearts of his readers. Let me just say this, Gog is creepy! Is he good? Is he evil? or are these concepts that don't even pertain to him? And even more, regardless of how good or evil he is, is Gog a threat simply because of his power? These are questions that the JSA must face. And Johns has scripted a story, that's ably recreated by the art of Fernando Pasarin that makes the reader wonder what's going to happen, feel completely floored by the story as it unfolds, and excited to read the next chapter. As a reader of many comics, there really aren't many comics that leave me eager for the next issue, but JSA is definitely one of them. I can't wait for Justice Society of America #17.
<Rich's note
I love this book, every month it is on the top of the pile and I have not been disappointed yet! Johns gives fans what they want. Great stories, great characterization, great fight scenes and adds in the humor and emotion many writers forget these imaginary people have. I also can't wait for July 2nd to come so I can read #17.>

The Invincible Iron Man #2
Written by Matt Fraction
Art by Salvador Larroca
What happens to something when it becomes obsolete? Well two thinks really, you can throw it away and get the new version of it or you update it and make it better then it was before.
There is nothing wrong with either of those options unless money is an issue and in this world it’s much easier and cheaper to just replace it instead of spending the money to up grade it you’re self.
Tony Stark doesn’t have the option of just buying a new Iron Man suit he has to upgrade his. But what if someone has found a way to make Iron Man disposable? That is what keeps Tony up at night because that nightmare has come true. Fraction and Larroca have given us a look at a possible future, one were anyone can be Iron Man.
This is why this story is so great because we have always thought that Tony Stark was at the cutting edge, the one and only but he is not. There is a faster more effect Iron Man out there and he is younger, a lot more ruthless and welling to sell his knowledge to the highest bidder.
So how does Iron Man stop a man who is every bit his equal and more? I can’t wait to find out.

Robin & Spoiler Special
Written by Chuck Dixon
Art by Rafael Albuquerque & Victor Ibanez
It’s good to see this team back together again. I really enjoyed the stories about these two. The love that could have been and lose when she was taken away. Now that she is back it seems like old times and I love it.
So what we have here is two tales that are suppose to reintroduce Spoiler (who you should all know by now is Stephanie) and to let us know where and what she has been doing with herself for the year when she was dead.
The first tale is about Stephanie trying to get Tim to loosen up by having him hang out with some of her friends in an abandoned building which is exactly what high school students do, honestly. Of course things go wrong and Robin and Spoiler must jump into action.
So yes it is by the numbers, but it is refreshing to see Stephanie trying to get Tim to loosen up because this is the one thing that has been reversed in his life. Someone he cared strongly for has some back in to his life. I can’t wait to see the trouble and happiness this brings for him.
The second tale doesn’t work that well. It is about Stephanie’s time in Africa and it really boils down to her realizing that she can’t escape from putting her life in danger. It just seems like a weak reason for her to leave in the first place.
The saving grace is that she has reconnected with her mother too and I can’t wait to see how that plays out.
I honestly believe that Spoiler needs her own mini or a series of her own. She has a lot of stories in her.

Detective Comics #845
Written by Paul Dini
Art by Dustin Nguyen
I like Paul Dini; he is a great Batman writer because he lets Batman be the greatest detective in the world. He also lets Batman be human. He takes the time to show us that he needs to eat and he gets stumped and that he uses every resource he has to solve a crime.
I really enjoyed seeing him interact with people in a mystery chat room because he sees that for all of his knowledge someone else might see something a different way and he is not so full of himself that he can’t ask for help, even if it’s from and unknown screen name.
I also loved what he has done with the Riddler. His was one of the best evolutions of a bat villain since Catwoman.
The only problem with this story is that it felt too much like a filler story before the next huge summer crossover event, even if it is.
I can’t blame Dini for that.

Young X-Man #3
Written by Marc Guggenheim
Art by Yanick Paquette
Man I hope Cyclops is a Skrull because these kids deserve better then this. This is another throw away issue from a story that we know will be forgotten when Uncanny X-Men 500 comes out.
It’s sad because New X-Men was a great series till Messiah Complex complete changed everything. It feels like these character are being put through there paces for nothing.
I am disappointed and I hope this series really turns around soon.
----------------------------------------
Young X-Men #3
Written by Marc Guggenheim with art by Yanick Paquette, Ray Snyder, Kris Justice, Rob Schwager, and David Sharpe
Review by Kenne
In the aftermath of Messiah CompleX, Marvel canceled New X-Men and placed the writers of that book on the all-new X-Force title. Many people were concerned because this left the students that had made up New X-Men without a home. Then along came Young X-Men, but written by someone else and with only two of the members of the New X-Men to fight alongside a group of relative unknowns and new characters. There was a lot of mixed feelings about this new book among my comic crowd even before the first issue came out.
Then the first issue arrived and many of my friends (and me) were left wondering what the heck was going on. Why would Cyclops assemble this team of young mutants? Why would he need another "kill squad" when we already had X-Force? And even worse, why would Cyclops send these young X-Men out to assassinate Cannonball, Mirage, Magma and Sunspot, those who had been the original new mutants and some of Xavier's oldest allies, because according to Cyclops they had become a new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.
There were clues in place that alluded to something not being quite right. Why would the former New Mutants have become evil? Why would Cyclops order them taken out when it made more sense to just subdue them and take them captive, you know in case there was some brainwashing involved. Because Cyclops was acting so out of character, there has been speculation that Cyclops isn't really Cyclops, and someone is manipulating these young mutants for their own purposes. It is this hope and speculation that has kept me interested and willing to let this first arc of Young X-Men play out.
However, I still have issues with the writing in this book. It SEEMS like what we've suspected is happening. After all, there's been no direct indication from the former New Mutants that they've gone over to the dark side. They seem just as dumbfounded to be attacked by the Young X-Men as the Young X-Men seem dumbfounded that they've been ordered to take out some of their former teachers. However, in the long run, there is still some issues that need to be addressed. Like why would Dust consider working with the X-Men of greater good than the work she was doing with battling Al-Qaeda? Why is Dani suddenly acting all butch and bitchy when she's always been a voice of reason in the X-Men? And what IS Cannonball and Sunspot up to that they think is causing Cyclops to target them? How dumb are Dust, Wolfscub, Blindfold, and Rockslide that they'd accept Cyclops word that the only solution at their disposal is to take out their enemies first? Something is definitely off, and I'm having a hard time believing that the answer is something as simple as someone has disguised themselves as Cyclops and is manipulating things. And, I'm sorry, but if it turns out that the X-Men really are deciding that it's time to kill your enemies before they can kill you, then I'm done with the X-Men as a whole. Never in all the long history of the X-Men has it just been across the board decreed that it's time to kill the bad guys without making sure there isn't any other options. The true mark of a hero is that you always look for another solution to a problem besides killing. True, the X-Men (and other heroes) have killed before, but it has never been done lightly or simply because it's the easiest solution. However, what "Cyclops" has put forth to the Young X-Men is that lethal force is ALL they have left. And I just don't agree with that at all.
But, on a positive side, the art is pretty.

Yessiree, that's a NEW Mighty Avengers coming in this week along with Secret Invasion #2. Wonder who will be revealed this week??? New Marvel #1's include 2 new Iron Man titles just in time for the movie (actual they should have come out last week). Pairing with Dynamite Entertainment, Marvel also releases a new 12 part New Avengers/Invaders meeting by Alex Ross and Jim Krueger (Earth X /Justice/ Project : Superpowers) and pencils by the very woofy Steve Sadowski(JSA).
Vertigo has the new House of Mystery coming in. DC starts it's next round of mini-series with Rann/ Thanagar: Holy War (of 8) a cosmic war between the 2 worlds starring Hawkman, Adam Strange and Bizarro (?). New #1's include 2 titles than fan's have been begging for for years! Tor #1 (Joe Kubert) and The War That Time Forgot #1.

Marvel had a great week. Avengers : Initiative#12 and New Avengers#40 were both incredible. Skrulls are a plenty in the two Avengers books. Starting with A:I. My money is on Gyrich. Wha-huh??? Trauma??? Never let Taskmaster deliver your dead family's remains, it's hilarious. Freedom Force and hhmmm now there are 2 - 70's Ms. Marvel's, call me Carol, costumes flying around. The writing is great, the moments are great and the art is good. NA is so spoilerific that all I can say is wow. Bendis is (so far) making Secret Invasion fun, especially for us who are trying to figure out Who(m) do You Trust! (oh and I called it) W/out spoiling: this issue goes back and focuses on the Skrulls before they invaded... thats ALL I can say...
Also out from Marvel is X-Men Legacy #210. Carey has me up and down. I love what he is doing here but did it need to be 3 issues so far? Get on with it. I am hoping maybe Xavier will learn he did do much more harm than good and maybe, just maybe, Mags was right??? This issue has Xavier finding a new path for himself. Aw... So how does Rogue fit in? The skunkheaded Southern belle finally makes an appearance in Australia of all places. So Xavier is going to walk to Australia? AND as if you didn't have too many questions about Young X-Men and the old Muties , the new Hellfire Clubber Lord Da Costa makes an appearance but the epilogue is more about Shaw and his strange new manila file...
Honorable mentions : Marvel Comics Presents#8. Wonder if Scott ever acknowledged his dads death? He does here. Having a heart to heart with Logan he realizes that he had daddy issues. No duh. Both his “dads” failed him. Good but shoulda been in an X-book, somewhere. (Maybe bring back X-Men Unlimited???)
DC had a few (IMO) good books, ok, 1great book. Green Lantern#30. Geoff, could you please write everything DC? More revelations, twists and turns as Johns re-tells GL's origins. This isn't a straight up retelling it's more of respecting the past and adding something new for the future.. Including Abin Sur's cockpit buddy, Hal's first flight and Carol's boyfriend. That last page is a doozy!
Legion of Super-Heroes#41 and Action Comic#864 Both have the Legion in them but only one I really want to see. I like the direction that Shooter is taking and hoping and wishing that after this whole Legion of 3 Worlds he gets to write the Action Legion or a form of them. I miss them. They are like friends I left back in NY and don't get to see often. The art in Action threw me for a loop tho, not horrid but not good, do-able. I kinda missed bug eyes and big teeth! Oh and yet more creepy Batmans dead stuff??? RIP
DC Universe #0- Did I miss something??? He is coming back? I thought my issue was missing a page at first. Good commercial for 54 cents!
Also out: Teen Titans and TT year one. Boy I miss reading a good Titans book...

First up from Kenne:
Everybody’s Dead #1 & 2
Written by Brian Lynch
Art by Dave Crosland, Leonard O’Grady, and Neil Uyetake
Review by Kenne
It seems that zombie books are all the rage these days, and I have to admit that I have a soft spot for the zombie yarn. At first glance, Everybody’s dead might not look like much, but if you’re looking for a zombie book that’s not quite so heavy, the Everybody’s dead is for you.
The first issue actually takes place on the night before the event that caused almost the entire world to turn into zombies. We’re introduced to the main cast as they partake in a fraternity party given by the boys of Beta Eta Delta, all half a dozen of them, with their one pledge, Swee. When a rival fraternity disrupts their party, hilarity and action ensues. At the end of the night, most of the BED boys and a couple guests decide to go to sleep and leave the clean up for the next morning. What they don’t know is how much things are about to change.
In the second issue, the BED boys get their first look at a world over run by zombies, and in true Everybody’s Dead style, hilarity ensues. Pledge Swee is given the hard task of burying the dead zombies while the rest of the gang decides what to do now. However, one of their number left the frat house shortly before dawn (after the event that turned people into zombies) to walk his former girlfriend and current flame, Aurora home. How will the guys of BED and their friends survive when Everybody’s Dead but them?!?
The art isn’t usually the kind of art that I like, but for a lighthearted book like this, it totally fits. This is the kind of book that you can just sit back and enjoy yourself. This isn’t a cerebral look at society, nor is it a book that tries too hard to be something that it’s not. Everybody’s Dead is just a book about how a group of goof ups survive when everyone else around them has become zombies. As long as you can accept that this book is not trying to be the next great piece of literature, I’m sure that you can appreciate Everybody’s Dead and have fun with it. And before I end this review, I have to make mention to my favorite character, Greta. She’s funny and clueless, but there’s also something a little adorable about her too. I hope she stays in the book for a long time to come.
Echo #2
Story and Art by Terry Moore
Review by Kenne
For those of you who knew and were fans of Strangers in Paradise (SIP), you’re probably as excited as I am to have the next story by Terry and his self-publishing company, Abstract Studio to enjoy. While SiP dealt primarily with the relationship between two young women on their journey to find love and happiness, it might be a little jarring that this latest project is quite different. See, Echo is about a young woman who finds herself attached, literally, to a super-suit developed by the military. To fanboys, this may seem like a dream come true, but for Julie, it’s just another complication that she really doesn’t need. Too bad for her, she’s about to learn how much more complicated her life can get because Ivy is on her way to see Julie and get back the military suit, well, technically part of a suit since Julie only has a part of it which is attached to her chest.
The art is pure beauty as only Terry Moore can draw it. When Julie gets frustrated because her life isn’t going as she would want, Terry uses panels and expression to really drive the point home in the way that he’s become known. Echo is another fun and interesting story from the mind of Terry Moore. It shows a lot of promise, so I’m into the story for as long as Echo comes out.

From Nemocub:
The New Dynamix
Issues 1 & 2
Written by Allen Warner
Art by J. J. Kirby
Reading “The New Dynamix” makes me wish I read more Wildstorm comic book back when I was in high school. I honestly have no idea what is going on in this book yet I know the characters because they are all old B-listers from Wildstorm’s glory days. And you know what, I am ok with this because the story itself is actually pretty good, and it is making me want to go back and pick up old Image comic books that had this characters in them…or at least Wiki them.
The first two issues, out of five, are all set up. Warner understands that some people might not know who these characters are or remember them (like me) but he uses this to his advantage because he can take them in a new direction.
So far the story is about Black Halo’s (his original name was Omni) return to crime fighting after a lot of the worlds SPB’s (Super Powered Beings) have began to start missing
I have to say that the art provided by Kirby is top notch and even if the story doesn’t get you his art will. It is a mix of traditional super hero style with a little hip hop thrown in. it is truly fantastic.
So take a chance on this series, relive the early days of Wildstorm because honestly it’s only five issues, so enjoy the ride and fire up Wikipedia.
